Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
